Local

Day 1

Driving down to Grizeadale and thinking about being Artist in Residence....

Went into the chemists in Hawkeshead for some film.

"I've not seen you around here before, are you a local?"
said the woman from the chemists.
"I'm the artist in Residence at Grizedale" I said.
"Oh!" she said, "I guess you'll be around for a while".
"Does that make me a sort of local?", I said.

She went to serve the next customer.

I began to wonder if I could assume the role of a local wherever I was?

    Questions

    * Could I just become one or did I have to earn the right?
    * Who lays down the ground rules?
    * Are they locals?
    * If I was to wear something with local on it what does that actually mean?

I liked the idea that you are somehow a local wherever you go, tapping into some basic social understandings and common patterns of communication. Weather, gossip, chat ect.
So I made up a t-shirt and started to wear it around the place .

Limited edition artists T-shirt available from the Grizedale Visitors Centre shop soon.
