has about 30 outdoor equipement shops ready to satisfy the the every need of the would be trekker . It kind of reminded me when I used to go skiing . All those rich weekend skiers in their top gear, cocooned from the elements but no real understanding of how to engage with an "untarmaced" landscape.So the hand painted section of drystone wall with equipement logo's on them brought up quite a lot of contradictions which ruffled feathers , as it were ...

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to request your permission to use the (company) brand logo as part of a public artwork created by the artist Calum Stirling for Grizedale sculpture park in Cumbria . The artist is seeking permission from a number of companies to allow him to copy their brand name logo with the intention of replicating those logo’s in oil based paint on hand painted stones taken from , and then reinstalled into , a section of dry stone wall in the forest .

The sited artwork is acompanied by an online companion artweb site : www.calum.clara.net which public interest is directed to by a hand painted stone of the web address .

The intention is to replace a selection of fifteen to twenty stones , representing a selection of outdoor equipment selected at random from a cross section of the visiting public to the visitors centre at Grizedale .

This artwork has been initiated with the intention of examining issues of , how as consumers of outdoor sports ,camping and leisure wear the general public validate the experience of enjoying nature and associated outdoor pursuit's by the use of specialist clothing and equipment of innovative design and developement . The associated web site expands various issues covered during the artists research , including interveiws with members of the public , artists map , web addresses of participating company web sites and other documention .

Grizedale sculpture park is an internationally recognised artist residency program attracting high calibre artists from around the world for 20 years making work for the forest sculpture trail . Calum Stirling is currently in residence from April -July as part of the ongoing artist in residence programme .
