when I consider
the motives for making a 3foot record I have to remind myself of that
laddish fascination as a reformed vinyl junkie of the state known
as purchase and play . That motive that takes you in search
of the elusive £30 vinyl gem or 30p would be ashtray . The cover alone
often swings it . I goes without saying that Linked to this is naturally
the unrequited presence of the item as pop totem and adolescent fantasy
channel or other “label” intended or unintended by the record maker.
Where the road veers of at a an adjunct angle is when the pop consumer
becomes pop maker and slips into the jacket of producer; Much like
the new home rule of the midnight Cd burner in the fight to
distribute instant pop to mates and colleges at work.
The origin's
of home recording involved simple ingredients ( wax , steel , wood
) and it is to these Heath Robinson principals of wax drums and gosting
a sound image that I referred when set the task of getting long player
to work.
It is through
a set of arbitrary rules that the length of pre-recorded music is
currently distributed ,74min ,in the case of cd , Why ? Should it
not be that the environment and tasks people set themselves dictate
the playback time . Why not 1min - 4hours - 24hours . it there a place
in which to appropriate the role of Dj , playing 200 inch records
of home recordings . Nice sleeves ! If you get my drift .
